Cienaga de Las Macanas

Located 30 minutes from Chitre, this is the Azuero’s largest swamp ecosystem, approximately 2,000 hectares in size and recognized for its biodiversity and aquatic bird species (both local and migratory). The refuge is located in the small town, El Rincon, at the floodplain of Santa Maria river. Vegetation here consists of both deep rooted and floating plants and the edges of the wetlands are somewhat covered with trees and growth of dry ecosystems. An observation dock, public restrooms and a small hiking trail are found here.
